Desert X Art Club is a dynamic cross-disciplinary after school expanded learning program for K-8 students that uses visual, mixed-media, and digital arts to amplify the voices of youth as they explore unique public artworks in their communities and meet the people who created them. From painting and sculpture to video (digital storytelling) and photography, the program cultivates the creativity of Coachella Valley youth as they investigate and respond to art in the built landscape and natural environment.

Over nine after-school sessions in the Fall, Winter and Spring, students explore art in public places through exhibition and environmental site visits (field trips), then reflect on their experiences creatively and critically through hands-on artmaking. Students learn to develop their own unique voices, work as a team, and enhance their creative visual art, video, and storytelling skills. Desert X staff work with district teachers to tailor the curriculum to each class, age, and interest.

A final public presentation of artworks and videos in the spring celebrates the students as part of Desert X’s public programs, in partnership with Coachella Valley schools and College of the Desert.
