Desert X, a non-profit organization that produces an international, site-specific art exhibition. The organization, founded in 2015 in Palm Springs, California, has produced five successful exhibitions in 2017, 2019, 2021, 2023, and 2025. These exhibitions garner international media attention and critical acclaim and are funded by an active board, local and national philanthropists, local municipalities and businesses, and corporate funders. The organization is proud to offer free admission to the exhibition, which runs for nine weeks every two years.
We’re seeking a visionary and relationship-driven Director of Development to design and lead an ambitious fundraising strategy that meets annual and long-term revenue goals. Reporting to the Executive Director, you’ll drive a comprehensive development program, including major gifts, sponsorships, curated events, donor engagement, and digital outreach. You’ll join a creative, agile team that values bold ideas and impact-driven collaboration. This is a unique opportunity for a dynamic fundraiser who thrives on building meaningful relationships and believes in the transformative power of contemporary art.
The Director of Development is responsible for advancing the Desert X mission by identifying, cultivating, and soliciting major gift prospects, corporate sponsors and overseeing all fundraising efforts including:
- Donor communications
- Automated donor processes
- Cultivation events
- Private trips and tours
- Visits to the exhibition
- Grant writing, with the support of a contracted grants writer
- Foundation cultivation
Skills & Requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree required, advanced degree a plus.
- 5 –10 years’ experience in a non-profit setting, preferably an arts organization, with proven ability at fundraising, special events and team management.
- Proven track record of securing five- and six-figure gifts from individuals and corporations.
- Experience engaging board members in fundraising and donor introductions/activities.
- Superior judgment, professional initiative, and strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Strong interest and background in contemporary art.
- Ability to lead and take direction as part of a team.
- Excellent administrative and organizational abilities.
- Knowledge of E-Tapestry or another database/CRM.
- Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Adobe Creative Cloud suite an asset.
- Familiarity with AI fundraising tools a plus.
- Ability to effectively interact with and manage external vendors and personnel who support the department.
- Ability to work independently, meet deadlines, and coordinate multiple projects simultaneously.
- Must thrive in a fast-paced environment, with a solutions-oriented mindset, and possess high levels of tact and diplomacy.

Some travel is required. Candidates based in the Los Angeles area or broader Southern California region who are willing to spend 3 – 4 months cumulatively in Palm Springs during the exhibition cycle will be considered on a case-by-case basis.
Compensation is commensurate with experience. Medical cafeteria plan offered.

Volunteers are vital to Desert X. Volunteers provide needed skills and expertise in a variety of meaningful roles based on interests and experience. The organization supports your learning and development throughout the exhibition and offers opportunities throughout the year to build relationships with other culturally curious individuals.
