Karola Braga
Sfumato
“In ancient times, our ancestors held a deep appreciation for fragrances, valuing aromatic spices and resins as luxurious commodities. This admiration led to the establishment of various trade routes, including the renowned Incense Route, which facilitated the transportation of these precious goods over great distances, fostering cultural exchange, commerce, and discovery. In this historical context, AlUla played a crucial role as a significant resting point for caravans along the Incense Route.”
Karola Braga’s work Sfumato is inspired by the historical richness of the ancient Incense Route and embarks on a journey to recreate its olfactory sensory atmosphere. Ethereal paths in the sand reveal themselves through the presence of incense smoke, inviting visitors to reconnect with the olfactory heritage of the route in a unique and immersive encounter. The captivating trails of smoke guide participants on a sensory exploration, immersing them in the olfactory notes that once permeated the landscapes. Serving as a bridge between ancient wisdom and contemporary interpretations, the project offers an engaging and thought-provoking journey through time; as the artist explains, “Sfumato is a condensed odyssey designed to captivate participants through its sensory richness, connecting them to the past.” The project also reflects Braga’s commitment to pushing artistic boundaries, and creates an immersive experience that resonates with the intricate richness of the human olfactory sense.
